1  Workshop Topic and Goals

The Semantic Web Mining workshop is a follow-up to last year's workshop at ECML/PKDD, the first workshop on that topic at a large international conference. Our intention to bring together researchers and practitioners from the two fast-developing research areas Semantic Web and Web Mining has resulted in a very successful workshop. The goal of this year's workshop is to continue and extend this sucessful start.

The idea of Semantic Web Mining is to improve the results of Web Mining by exploiting the new semantic structures in the web, as well as to use Web Mining to help build the Semantic Web. The Semantic Web is based on a vision of Tim Berners-Lee. He suggests to enrich the web by machine processable information which is organized on different levels (see http://www.w3.org/DesignIssues/Semantic.html). For Web Mining, the levels from XML and RDF to ontologies and logics are of particular interest.

Web Mining applies data mining techniques on the web. Three areas can be distinguished: Web usage mining analyzes user behavior, Web structure mining explores hyperlink structure, and Web content mining exploits the contents of the documents in the Web.

In the workshop, we want to discuss the use of XML, RDF, ontologies, and logics for the three web mining areas; and the support of web mining techniques for building (XML and RDF) schemes and ontologies. Recent advances in Web site design that pay increasing attention to the need for a clear semantic structure underlying the information architecture of a site, have prepared the ground for both broader and deeper applications of semantic mining technologies. Similarly, new developments in mining such as the increasing analysis of usage information for personalising Web sites, pose new challenges for semantic encodings of Web resources.

There are quite a number of people from different communities that approach the field of Semantic Web Mining from different, interesting angles. The goal of the workshop is to establish and enhance communiction between these communities.
